According to estimates of the Health Ministry, nearly 3 million of Sri Lanka’s adult population requires the use of spectacles.
The Etisalat Vesak Spectacle Dansala was held on May 14 at the Galle Town Hall from 8am to 7pm to provide spectacles to financially challenged Sri Lankans, who are unable to afford the services of an optometrist and lenses.
The initiative was held for the second consecutive year spearheaded by the Etisalat Recreation Club (ERC) along with the support and backing of Etisalat employees.
Etisalat conducted the Vesak Dansala under the theme “Bringing Hope, Giving Sight” and in partnership with the ‘So Others May See’ (SOMS) NGO, who partnered to provide the spectacles and the necessary specialist care to the participants of the camp. With the help of SOMS, Etisalat also reached out to patients on the waiting list of the Karapitiya Hospital to provide free consultation and spectacles.
Etisalat employees were the backbone of this initiative providing not only the monetary assistance needed to finance this project but also volunteering at the event by guiding patients through registration, checkups and eye examinations at camp.
Etisalat Lanka doubled the total value of the project by contributing an amount that was equal to the total amount contributed by its employees towards this worthy cause. Through this initiative 2,000 pairs of spectacles were provided to individuals who were not able to afford the services of an optometrist. Approximately 80 percent of the participants received spectacles on the day of the eye camp while 20 percent customizable glasses will be delivered to Etisalat Flagship Stores Island wide. There, patients can collect their spectacles on a pre-designated day.
The camp consisted of 12 optometrist stations, three auto refraction and testing areas, over 24 optometrists were deployed on site to assist with pre-screening, oversee issuance of reading glasses on site and over 150 employees of Etisalat volunteered their time and effort to guide patients through registration, checkups, eye examinations and managing the issuance counters to give away the spectacles and a Etisalat customer care point. Etisalat also teamed up with local societies such as the Grama Sanwardana to create awareness about the initiative among the communities prior to the event.
